Silky backing fabric

This is the fabric that I use at the back of my embroidery. The backing fabric is white, fine, silky fabric – ideal for ribbon embroidery and stumpwork. It is also useful to use as a background piece and for Trapunto.

The size of the block is 57 x 60 cm (22 x 23 inches) – large enough to fit in a 18 inch hoop or large frame.

About backing fabric

Before you start to embroider, an additional layer of fabric should be added to the back of your embroidery panel to stabilize and support it. Fine, soft, white muslin, lawn and polyester silk are all good choices. Ensure that the backing fabric is the same size as the embroidery block and that it is neither too thick nor too tight a weave. The layers are stretched onto a frame and you will stitch through both layers from the beginning.
